Friday May 6th

Library Playdate at 58th Street NY Public Library (East Midtown)
Fridays 1015-11a in May. Free. This event will take place in person at 58th Street Library. Children ages 2-5 and their caregivers visit the library for unstructured play. This is a great time for the librarian to get to know you and your little ones while also developing socialization and early literacy skills. In accordance with New York State guidelines and Library protocol, patrons are encouraged but not required to wear a face covering.

Kids Create: Mother’s Day Craft at Crown Heights Brooklyn Public Library
Friday May 6th 3-4p. Free. Join us for a special craft activity! We will be decorating window boxes for the mother figures in your life. This is a registered event for children ages 6-12yrs of age. Please note masks required for entry. Register here.

“Our Differences Make Us Stronger Party” (virtual)
Friday May 6th 4p. Free. Suzi Shelton and Albert Iturregui-Elias release a song and video about Blended Families called “Mama’s House, Daddy’s House.” Suzi and Albert will host “Our Differences Make Us Stronger Party” on Facebook and YouTube celebrating their new song and music video “Mama’s House, Daddy’s House,” as well as a diverse cast of special guests including who will share stories of their blended families and how they celebrate their unique family’s strengths and differences. There will be games and prizes too!

Movies Under The Stars: Spider-Man: No Way Home in Sunset Park
Friday May 6th 8-10p. Free. Location: Sunset Park Playground. Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. With Spider-Man’s identity now revealed, Peter asks Doctor Strange for help. When a spell goes wrong, dangerous foes from other worlds start to appear. Movies begin at dusk. Glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. In the event of heavy rain or extreme weather, the screening may be canceled. The decision to cancel the event will be made prior to the screening and will be prominently posted on our website.

Brooklyn Bike Jumble in J.J. Byrne Playgroun (Park Slope)
Saturday May 7th 10a-4p. Free to attend. The New York Bike Jumble returns to Washington/JJ Byrne Park around the Old Stone House at Fifth Avenue and 4th street in Park Slope, Brooklyn. for the twelfth year in a row. Celebrate Eid at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Saturday May 7th 11a-4p. Tickets: $13 per person, $12 seniors (children under 1 free). Book tickets here. The festival of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and people celebrate by gathering with family and friends, exchanging gifts, and greeting each other. Jane’s Carousel Day in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Saturday May 7th 11a-6p. Free. Join us on May 7th from to celebrate Jane’s Carousel Day at Brooklyn Bridge Park! Commemorating the 100-year history of the Carousel, we’ll be offering free rides for the community and fun activities for the whole family. There will also be free face painting, guest speakers, and balloon animals.

Events for Youth and Families: Frog and Toad at the Central Brooklyn Public Library
Saturday May 7th 1-2p. Free. Location: Dweck Center. Arnold Lobel’s well-loved characters hop from the page to the stage in this musical which follows two great friends through four fun-filled seasons. Frog and Toad spend the seasons planting Gardens, Swimming, raking leaves, and sledding down the hill in snow. Presented by Plaza Theatrical Productions, Inc.

Birding: Beginner Birding in Fort Greene Park
Sunday May 8th 10-11a. Free. Location: Fort Greene Park Visitor Center. Our Urban Park Rangers will guide you to the best viewing spots in New York City to see spring migratory birds. Birding programs are appropriate for all skill levels and beginners are welcome. Please bring your own binoculars. Join the Urban Park Rangers on a birding adventure around Fort Greene Park to learn the basics of birding how to identify common species in our parks.

Opera for Kids: Il barbiere di Siviglia at Theater at St. Jean (UES)
Sunday May 8th 10a & 2p. Tickets: $5 child, $20 adult. Gioachino Rossini’s sparkling music animates the hijinks of Figaro, opera’s most famous barber. New York City Opera’s “Opera for Kids!” program is a popular series of hour-long, family-friendly adaptations of classic operas narrated by General Director Michael Capasso. The performances are followed by a Q&A with the cast and are a fun and engaging way for kids to get their first taste of live opera.

Mother Nature Hike in Allison Pond Lake (Staten Island)
Sunday May 8th 11a-12n. Free. Location: Prospect Avenue and Brentwood Avenue. On this Mothers Day, explore the park in search of animal families and learn how mothers care for their young.

Midori & Friends Mother’s Day Concert in Forest Park
Sunday May 8th 130-330p. Free. Location: George Seuffert Bandshell. Midori & Friends presents a Mother’s Day celebration for the whole family featuring Alsarah & the Nubatones and the Villalobos Brothers. Alsarah is a Sudanese-born singer, songwriter, and ethnomusicologist, and together with the Nubatones she enchants audiences with East African retro-pop, proving that soul transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. The Villalobos Brothers are one of today’s leading Contemporary Mexican ensembles. Their original compositions and arrangements masterfully fuse and celebrate the richness of Mexican folk music with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music.

Spring 2022 Overlook Concerts in Riverside Park
Sundays 2-330p until May 15th. Free. Location: 116th Street Overlook. Riverside Park Conservancy and our generous supporters present our Spring 2022 Overlook Concert series, featuring talent from the French Cookin’ Blues and the Manhattan School of Music Brass Quintet (May 15th). May 8: French Cookin’ Blues, David “Doc” French, Leader – This Blues Hall of Fame band plays authentic Blues from around the country for a special New York sound.

Flower Patch on the Farm at Queens Botanical Garden
Saturday-Sunday May 7th-8th 11a-4p. $16 per Adult (flower pot included), $14 per Child (ages 4-12), Students (with ID), & Seniors (62+) (flower pot included), Free for Children 3 and under (flower pot not included), Free for Members (flower pot not included), Additional flowers available for $7/pot, while supplies last. Unique floral and garden creature installations transform the QBG Farm into a fantastic flower spectacle, an immersive environment and stunning backdrop for photos. Meet costumed nature creatures, pick your own pot of flowers, do floral-themed crafts, and make your mark on Chalk Walk! Family Discovery Days at Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Saturdays-Sundays 1030a-1230p until May 22nd. Free with Garden admission. This is a drop-in program for families with children of all ages. Experiment, learn, and play! Hands-on activity stations throughout the Discovery Garden encourage families to explore science and nature together. Pot up a plant or create a nature craft to take home alongside volunteer Discovery Docents and GAP Teen Apprentices. All programs are outdoors and canceled in inclement weather. Baby Farm Animals & Children’s Fun at Aviator Sports and Events Center

Wake Up, Daisy! at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Fridays-Sundays 11-1145 (doors 1030a) & 1-145p (doors 1230p) until 12/31/22. Tickets: $12 adult, $8 child. Purchase tickets here. Location: 79th Street and West Drive Central Park. Wake Up, Daisy! tells the story of Daisy, a lively little girl living in the heart of New York City in an apartment overlooking Central Park. At Daisy’s much-anticipated birthday party, she encounters three special guests, known as her “Squad-parents”, from Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx who grant her the gifts of courage, knowledge, and a second chance. When an unwelcome guest shows up and casts a curse on her, Daisy’s life is forever changed. But through the support of her friends and an adventure throughout the city, Daisy’s strong self-determination and vivid imagination may be all she needs to break the curse.

Seaport Discovery: Exploring Our Waters with Eric Carle at South Street Seaport Museum
Fridays-Sundays 11a-5p in April & May. Admission is $5 per child aged 1-12, with no charge for accompanying caregivers, teens, and infants. Advanced timed tickets are recommended. Book today! Visit our new discovery room of maritime-themed art by Eric Carle, beloved creator of picture books for young children. Seaport Discovery: Exploring Our Waters with Eric Carle is designed specifically for children aged 2-7 and their adults. In June, it will open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Please note that people over age 5 will be required to show proof they are fully vaccinated to enter indoor exhibition spaces and to board Ambrose.

The Yard: Adventure Playground on Governor’s Island
Saturdays-Sundays 12n-4p. Free admission but fees for ferries. See website for details. Wel­come back to The Yard, New York City’s only adven­ture play­ground! The Yard offers free week­end play from 12 – 4pm. The Yard is a kids-only space stew­ard­ed by trained play­work­ers. The main play area is rec­om­mend­ed for young peo­ple ages 6 to 12 and the fam­i­ly play area wel­comes chil­dren under 5. The Yard sup­plies young peo­ple with loose parts mate­ri­als for build­ing, explor­ing, imag­in­ing and destroy­ing. In addi­tion to free week­ends, The Yard also offers sum­mer camp, school field trips, birth­day par­ties and spe­cial pro­grams, all with adher­ence to CDC guidelines. Farm Exploration Days in Randall’s Island Park
Saturdays-Sundays 10a-4p until October 8th. Free. Location: Urban Farm. Explore the Urban Farm’s variety of crops, rice paddies, and fragrant herbs, and meet the chickens too! All ages welcome!

1885 Tall Ship Wavertree Free Tour at South Street Seaport
Fridays, Saturdays-Sundays 11a-5p until May 22nd. Free. The permanently-moored 1885 tall ship Wavertree is open to the public for FREE on Saturdays and Sundays, with timed entry, at Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets). Guided tours depart hourly and last approximately 30 minutes. Advance reservations are recommended. Guided tours include access to the main deck and quarter deck. Learn how people worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing vessel, from the captain to the ship’s officers, cooks, and crew. Then visit the cargo hold and stand atop the viewing platform where you can take in the massive main cargo area. Proof of vaccine required for all guests over age 5. Masks required.

Sharks at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Museum hours Wednesday-Sunday 10a-530p. Included in General Admission+One. See website for all the details.The new exhibition Sharks features dozens of life-sized models ranging from 33 feet to 5.5 inches long, fossils from the Museum’s collections, touch-free interactive exhibits that challenge visitors to hunt like a hammerhead, and more for visitors of all ages. Older than dinosaurs—and more threatened than threatening—sharks are spectacular, surprising, and often misunderstood. Discover the incredible diversity of this ancient and fascinating group of fishes. Note: The Museum continues to require vaccinations against COVID-19 and facial coverings.
